With crime rates on the rise here are a few simple things you can do to protect your property.

  1. Don’t tell people when you will not be home. Sometimes this happens inadvertently when using social media.
  2. Don’t post vacation photos until you are home from your trip.
  3. Stay informed http://www.nixle.com/ will send text alerts to your phone. Plus

  1. Put a lock on your spare keys. Don’t leave keys to your home just laying around you might as well not lock to door if the key is under the mat.
  2. Have a dog.
  3. Motion sensitive lights are a good bet as well. They save money on electric bills and the sudden activation acts as a rudimentary alarm.
  4. Get to know your neighbors they can alert you of suspicious activity around your home and you can do the same for them.
  5. Use warning signs like beware of dog, or home security signs these are a big deterrent.
  6. My grandmother use to leave a lamp under the window and a radio on so no one could tell if she was at home or not.
  7. Keep a record of your valuables in case items are stolen. Insurance and the police will need detailed descriptions and a list of everything missing. Walk through the house and make a video zoom in on serial numbers, make and model. The problem is the human brain is wired to notice what is there not what is missing.
  8. There are tons of apps out there to turn web cams into security cameras.
  9. “Hide expensive valuables, such as tablets and cameras, from plain sight so thieves can’t get to them. One way to do this is by creating a secret compartment that is hidden by plastic binders. No one would shuffle through boring office supplies when looking for something good to steal.”[1]
  10. “When you leave large cardboard boxes on the curb you’re really just advertising that big new TV you have in your living room. Take the time to break down those boxes and fit them in the bin. Burglars will be less intrigued to give your home a surprise visit.”[2]
  11. Bike locks are a lot cheaper than replacing a bike.
  12. Consider a home security system even if all it does is make noise it will help.
